Don't leave it until it's too late
A will deals with what happens when you die. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) helps protect your choices while you're still alive.
A stroke, an accident or serious illness can leave your family trying to make decisions without the legal authority they need. Being married does not automatically give your partner full power to manage your affairs. An LPA lets you choose who can act for you, while you still have the ability to make that choice.
For help with banks, bills, pensions, property and financial decisions. A registered LPA can be used with your permission while you still have capacity, or only after you lose it, depending on your choice.
For decisions about care, medical treatment and where you live, when you cannot make the decision yourself. You can also choose whether your attorneys may decide about life-sustaining treatment.
Simple process
Tell me what you need. I'll explain the two LPA types, the people involved and the choices to make.
I fill in your LPA using the government's online preparation service, based on your instructions.
I give you clear signing instructions. You arrange the donor, attorney, certificate provider and witness signatures in the correct order.
I help with the online registration details and explain how the signed original must be posted to the Office of the Public Guardian.
Important: The government online service prepares the forms, but you must print and sign them. The signed LPA still has to be sent to the Office of the Public Guardian. Registration typically takes 8 to 10 weeks if there are no errors. The donor or an attorney is the formal applicant.
No hidden professional fee
The £80 fee covers preparing each LPA and help with the registration process. The government charges separately to register each document.
| What you need | My fee | OPG fee | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Financial LPA | £80 | £92 | £172 |
| Health and Welfare LPA | £80 | £92 | £172 |
| Both LPAs, one person | £160 | £184 | £344 |
Government fees may change. A reduction or exemption may apply depending on income or benefits. The £80 fee is for form preparation and general help, not specialist legal advice. Any optional extra charges should be agreed before work starts.
Local LPA preparation
I work with people in Crawley, Horsham, Horley and the nearby parts of West Sussex and Surrey. You can ask questions in plain English, with no call centre and no long legal lecture.
Common questions
No. You can make an LPA yourself, or get help preparing it. Complex family, property or legal issues may need a solicitor's advice.
Not automatically. Marriage or family ties do not, on their own, give someone full legal power to deal with your bank accounts or make every health decision for you.
I prepare the forms using the government's online service and help with registration details. The forms must then be printed, signed correctly and sent to the Office of the Public Guardian. It is not an entirely paperless process.
The donor, a certificate provider, attorneys and witnesses all have signing roles. I will explain the correct order and the requirements. You arrange the signatures.
Possibly. Some people qualify for a 50% reduction or an exemption from the government registration fee. Ask me or see the official guidance.
While you still understand and can make the decision to appoint someone. Once you lose the mental capacity to make an LPA, it is too late to create one.
A quick message is all it takes
